Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center offers a variety of educational and training programs to schools, organizations, interest groups and individuals year-round. We also offer more advanced training for school counselors, hospital staff, social workers and undergraduate and graduate classes at local universities. Programs include workshops, training and consultations.

ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
ASIST is a 2-day suicide first aid interactive workshop for community caregivers. This 2-day training is facilitated by 2 ASIST Registered Trainers and includes all materials, workbooks, handouts, breakfast, lunch and refreshments. ASIST provides practical training for caregivers seeking to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Participants learn how to: recognize invitations for help, reach out and offer support, review the risk of suicide, apply the ASIST model of suicide intervention, and link people with community resources. Participants also have the opportunity to practice and implement the model in multiple role-play scenarios. This is a highly interactive workshop and attendance for the full two days is essential.

Suicide 101
This one-day workshop includes all materials and 2 experienced professional trainers in suicide education. Participants leave with knowledge of crisis theory, the development and resolution of a crisis, an increased awareness of the ?warning signs? or symptoms that may increase the risk of someone thinking about suicide, a brief introduction of intervention with a person with thoughts of suicide, and discussion of resources available to help a person at risk of suicide.

safeTALK: Suicide Alertness For Everyone
This half-day suicide alertness training includes all materials and 1 Registered ASIST Trainer. In only a few hours, participants leave this workshop with an increased awareness and alertness in recognizing a person with thoughts of suicide and how to provide practical help to them. Participants learn helping steps through lecture, discussion, short video enactments and practice; participants become more willing and able to activate a suicide alert and connect the person at risk with the intervention help they want.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Post Disaster Distress
CBT for Post Disaster Distress was developed for use in New York after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. It was implemented again after a series of hurricanes in Florida in 2004, and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in Louisiana in 2005. This skills based intervention is for individuals who show more than normal transient stress and who require more than traditional crisis counseling. CBT for Post Disaster Distress is an intermediate step between crisis counseling for individuals immediately following a trauma and longer-term mental health treatment. CBT for Post Disaster Distress is an evidence-based, manualized intervention based on treatments that have been empirically validated for PTSD, depression and other anxiety disorders. The treatment entails 8-10 sessions divided into three main sections: education, coping skills and cognitive restructuring. Clients receive a workbook and complete assignments along with the opportunity to practice and reinforce the skills they have learned in sessions. Clinicians will find that outside the 10-session treatment model, these skills can be used to enhance currently used therapy treatments, and can be applied to help clients cope with a wide variety of psychosocial problems. Workshop participants also receive their own Clinician?s Manual and Client Workbook that is used to facilitate the treatment.

ACT 219: Suicide Prevention Inservice Training for School Personnel During the 2008 Regular Session of the Legislature, lawmakers approved the Jason Flatt Act (219). The Jason Flatt Act requires two hours of annual in-service training for school teachers, school counselors, and principals on suicide prevention. The Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center created a 2 hour training program for school personnel, as well as a day- long Training for Trainers so that the training can be effectively disseminated throughout schools in Louisiana.
